Tournament Spotlight: Benelux Clash IV

Quint: This weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Benelux Clash IV, hosted by the Tin Soldiers of Antwerpen at their club. After a lot of twisting and turning about the warband I was going to take, I settled on Gitz with NP/PP, for two reasons. I wanted to take something strong and fun, but also something I knew how to play. Although I don’t have that much Gitz experience, I’ve played a lot of PP, and Nexus has been my favourite deck since its release. In this article I’ll detail my tournament experience, and the takeaways I had for myself and my deck for the tourney.

Round 1: against Tomsche, Myari’s Purifiers ES/HG

The first game of the day was against Tomsche, one of the Tin Soldiers crew members. His deck was staying far back and I was consistently struggling to reach him with my 3 move. I only made a few attacks and managed to sneak a kill onto Senaela. However, it was then that I discovered the true power of Gitz, as my objective deck was empty by the end of round two. In the end, I won by a clean 19-12, although there were some scary moments in the final attacks. Also, I just wanna say that Starmaw is so absolutely insane I love that card.

This board really sucks if you play with Pillage…

Round 2: against Patrick, Ephilim’s Pandemonium CtC/WR

In round two I faced Patrick from Germany, who was playing the Pingstorm deck with Ephilim. This game was when I noticed something about my deck: I had a lot of times where I would want to be Covetous with a fighter but the token was already flipped. So, as a fix, I think I’ll add Unearthed Treasure to the deck next time, or play with Opportunist.

This game went really well, and I managed to take out all of the minions. The most scary thing about Ephilim is of course the warpfire token, but once the opponent uses it, you can bundle up without any consequences! In the end, I won 23-19, scoring my entire deck (again). I’m starting to consider taking a 13th objective…

Gitz doing what they do best, spreading out and holding tokens!

Round 3: against Johan, Headsman’s Curse BA/DS

The Headsman’s curse are always a scary warband to face, but a delightful challenge. There wasn’t much to say about this game, my attacks landed when they needed to, my deck sequenced nicely and I wiped my opponent. Won by 22-10 in the end.

Forgot to take a picture of the game board (whoops) but here are Johan’s beautifully painted ghosties!

Round 4: against Valentin, Kamandora’s Blades BA/DS

Man oh man. He strikes again. My long time rival and mentor Valentin was my next matchup, and he was looking for revenge after our game at worlds. This game was really fun, starting with Snirk rolling two crits and instantly sniping Kamandora, me repeatedly fumbling Skin of their Teeth, and some extreme bloodshed. I attacked into his dog with Zarbag, completely convinced I would get the kill, but of course forgetting his Great Fortitude. In the last round my Zarbag missed a grand total of four 3 hammers attacks into 2 dodge, and Val won 21-15. Always a delight to play him.

Zarbag standing there like he didn’t just miss all four of his attacks.

Round 5: against Tom, Ironsoul’s Condemnors BA/RS

This was an intense one. I think I’ve aged about five years during the third round alone. His Raging Slayers meant easy inspires and overruns, and he kept on denying my Strip the realm nicely. In the third round, Snirk was left alone in enemy territory, and after a Scream of Anger on my opponent’s Ironsoul, a nice Pilfer allowed me to step just out of reach, moving onto an Aqua Ghyranis to secure the win, taking it 16-13.

Man was I glad that I had Pilfer in my hand.

Final Thoughts

This was such a fun tournament! The people at TSA where really friendly, and thanks again for organising! Congratulations to Val for taking 1st place as well!

In the end, I took second place, going 4-1. I really underestimated Gitz, and thought that they would be a lot worse after the nerfs, but man they are still good, and definitely something to watch out for. I tried to slot in a 13th objective, but couldn’t really find one in the pairing… something to think about. Also, I’ll probably include Unearthed Treasure next time.

That’s it for this article! I’ll be practicing for Maastricht in the next few months, so if you wan’t to discuss decks or warbands, hop into the Staggerers Discord server! Have a great day!
